Miss Debbie's mini English Lessons Vol. 11
further and farther
What is the difference between these two words?
Both refer to distance, but there is a subtle distinction between these two words. Farther refers to physical distance or length. For example:
Because they had to park farther away, they got there after us.
or
Washington is farther from the equator than California, which explains the variation in temperatures.
Further, on the other hand, is more commonly used to refer to figurative or nonphysical distances. It is used to describe time or an amount of something. For example:
They had no further questions.
or
The drought caused further damage to the economy.
Quotes:
"You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get"
Michael Phelps
"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."
Isaac Newton
