一つ一つは簡単な言葉だけど、組み合わさると意外な意味になる。この中でいくつ分かるかな。

AMERICAN PHRASES (3) : WHAT DO THEY MEAN?
In all cultures, there are phrases and expressions that often have a different meaning than you would think. Here is a list of common American phrases and idioms, their meaning and the phrase used in an example.

Quid Pro Quo
- Latin meaning: something for something. It means an equal exchange or substitution of something. It can also be interpreted as: favor for favor; give and take. ギブアンドテイク
- EX: If I borrow my neighbors vacuum cleaner, he might say "quid pro quo" to signify that someday I will return the favor by letting him borrow something of mine.

Sell Yourself Short
- Lacking confidence or esteem in one's own abilities. 過小評価する
- EX: "You are a good person, don't sell yourself short."

Smoke and Mirrors
- Not a real explanation, lacking substance; an illusion (smoke and mirrors) - to describe a situation.
（マジシャンが使う煙と鏡から） ごまかし
- EX: "He said he would change the budget deficit but it was all smoke and mirrors."

The Cold Shoulder
- When you give someone the cold shoulder, you are snubbing, rejecting or resisting that person. 冷たい態度
- EX: "I tried to greet my former roommate but he gave me the cold shoulder."

Throw a Monkey Wrench (in something)
- To interfere with a smoothly running operation; to upset something in progress. 邪魔する、ぶち壊す
- EX: "He threw a monkey wrench into the group project when he forgot to bring her reports."

(To Be) Beside Yourself
- To be extremely angry or under great emotional stress. 我を忘れて、取り乱して
- EX: "He was beside himself after he was laid off from his job."

Tongue in Cheek
- A style of humor where one pretends to be serious while joking; half serious and half joking.
からかい半分に、皮肉を込めて
- EX: "That comment was very tongue-in-cheek."

Wing It
- To do something with little or no preparation or experience. 即興でやる
- EX: "She has never rock climbed before so she decided to just wing it, and see what happens."

『あれっ？マジわからん！！』始まって1分もたたないうちに、軽い気持ちで来てしまったことを後悔。PBTとCBTは受けたことがあったけど、どちらも最後に受けたのが高校生の時（200１年）。iBTに変わったとはいえ、『まぁ受けたことあるし、あれからずいぶん経つからスコアあがってたりして♪』と勉強はほとんどせず…。がっ、甘かった！

まずは受験の予約ですが、ETSのTOEFLテスト公式ホームページにアクセスし、My Home Page上で申し込みます。英語のサイトなので初めての人は時間がかかるかも。（Prometricのサイトでは日本語の説明があります。）申し込んだ後もTOEICのように受験票らしきものが発行されるわけではありません。当日何を持っていったらいいのか、受験票は本当にないのかなど、試験日が近くなるにつれおろおろ。あとで見たらBulletinにしっかり書いてありましたが、全部英語だし、20Ｐぐらいあったのでめんどくさくて後回しにしていました。皆さん、Bulletinはreading の練習だと思って、一回は必ず読みましょうね！（笑）

当日、受付は実際の開始時間の一時間前からスタート。まずregistration numberとpassportのチェック。そのあと同意書を書かされるのですが、英文で5行ぐらいあるものを、筆記体で書き写すという結構面倒なもの。書けない人はブロック体でいいと表記されていたので、思いっきりブロック体で書きました。（笑） 携帯は受付で切り、試験会場に入る前に必ずトイレに行くように指示されます。（行きたくても行きたくなくても）会場に入る前にまたpassportと同意書をチェック。中に入るとすぐ、パソコンで写真を撮られます。（webcamみたいな感じ）そこで同意書を渡し、係員に席に案内されます。荷物は必ず机の下。筆記用具（ＨＢの鉛筆）とペーパーを渡され、ＰＣ画面の名前などinfoが合っているかチェックしたあと、すぐにテスト開始。普通のテストと違ってみんなバラバラに始めるので、終わる時間もまちまちです。

試験の内容については、個人的な意見かもしれませんが、難しくなったように思います。例えばListening のsection でreading の要素が入っていたり、日本人が得意な文法のsectionもなくなりました。より総合的に英語力を図るものになっていると思います。 アカデミックな内容に加えて4時間近く拘束され、本当に疲れました…テスト後は当分英語を見たくない…と思っていましたが、あまりの出来の悪さに、帰り道早速TOEFL iBT参考書を買って帰りました。てな訳で、次はスコアアップの方法をお伝えできたらなと思います！TOEFL受験を控えている皆さん、一緒にがんばりましょうね！！
