HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY: Part I of III
Essay writing is very important at U.S. institutions. Most colleges and universities require an essay in order to apply to their school. Many courses require a term paper, often ten to twelve pages long. A good way to understand how to write an essay is to read one first. In this three-part series, I will discuss the key points in what to look for in an essay and in Part-III I will provide a sample essay.
(1) Research:
Anytime you provide a fact in your essay, you must support it with evidence. This means you must cite the source. For example, if you provide a statistic such as "the divorce rate in the U.S. is 50%," you must also indicate where you retrieved this information (The Washington Post, etc). Make sure you are an expert in your topic using the internet, databases and libraries.
(2) Analysis:
Now that you have a good understanding of your topic, analyze the arguments. Clearly define the claims (factual statements), write out the reasons for these claims, and provide the evidence that supports these reasons. Make sure that your logic is strong.
(3) Brainstorming:
Provide your own insight into your topic. Make the reader see a side of you or the topic that hasn't been introduced yet. Ask yourself a dozen questions about your topic and answer them. Try to come up with original topics to write about.
(4) Thesis:
Pick your best idea and turn it into a claim that you can write your essay around. This is a single sentence, an assertion or factual statement. You must inform the reader of where you are going with this claim and why. Having a clear thesis is very important.
(5) Outline:
Sketch out your essay before you write it. Briefly think of the introduction, paragraphs and conclusion. Here is when you should come up with at least the first sentence of each paragraph. You can also use bullet points to describe what each paragraph will contain. Map out the structure of your argument and make sure each paragraph can stand alone.
