REFUSING A REQUEST DATING CUSTOM
The rules and regulations surrounding romantic relationships and dating vary by country. It is important to understand and follow the correct rules or you could be in big trouble!
In the United States, these rules are not as structured as they are in other countries. Dating in the U.S. is casual and friendly. It is very common for people to have platonic (non-romantic) relationships with people of the opposite sex. If you are interested in someone of the opposite sex, you should typically let them know that you are interested by some casual "flirting." Flirting is the process of expressing interest through verbal or nonverbal communication. Types of flirting include eye contact, smiling suggestively, and flattery. If the person you are trying to flirt with responds to you, it usually means he or she is interested.
After that you may ask this person out on a date to get to know him or her better. American's like to do activities on a first date such as dinner and or a movie, miniature golf, etc. Until recently, men would typically pursue women. It is now more common for women to ask men out on a date. If this first date goes well, then the two of you will make plans for a second date. This will go on until you get to know the other person better and finally decide if you would like to be in a committed, monogamous (having only one mate) relationship. If the first date does not go well, you should let the person know that you would like to just be friends.
DATING CONVERSATION AND PRACTICE
Here are some common practices:
Whoever asks the other person on a date typically pays for the date.
Men, make sure to comment on how pretty the woman looks ("you look nice tonight); open doors for her ("let me get that for you") and treat her with respect regardless of how the date is going.
Do not expect to receive a kiss or sex on the first date! Americans usually get to know each other better and develop an emotional attachment before a sexual relationship begins.
If you are not interested in going on a date with someone: "sorry, I'm not interested in seeing anyone right now. But, we can hang out as friends."
If you go on a date and realize you are not interested in the person" "I had a great time with you tonight but I don't feel any chemistry/connection. Let's be friends."
If you want to go on another date: "I had so much fun with you tonight. How about we do something again next weekend? Let me know if you are free."
