FORMAL DINING PLACE SETTING and ETIQUETTE
Whether it is for a romantic dinner for two, or a business meeting, you will inevitably experience a fine dining restaurant. A fine dining restaurant usually is very expensive and has a formal dress attire. If that isn't intimidating enough, once you sit down at the dinner table you might become anxious when you see all of the different silverware and dishes. Here is a quick tip for silverware: start from the outside and work your way in. Otherwise, here is a description of each utensil and what it is used for:
|
A) | Napkin - place folded on your lap. |
B) |
Service plate - many different course plates may rest on this plate. |
C) |
Soup bowl (on service plate) |
D) |
Bread and butter plate with butter knife - bread is served at the beginning of the meal, usually before you order your entrees. |
E) |
Water glass - usually the biggest glass, with the lowest barrel. |
F) |
White wine glass - white wine glasses have a narrow bowl. |
G) |
Red wine glass - red wine glasses have a rounder, wider bowl. |
H) |
Fish fork - if you order oysters or crabs as an appetizer, you will use these. |
I) |
Dinner fork - use this as your main dish fork. |
J) |
Salad fork |
K) |
Service knife |
L) |
Fish knife |
M) |
Soup spoon - do not slurp your soup! |
N) |
Dessert spoon and cake fork. |
Many restaurants this day in age do not place all of these items on the table, but rather bring each of the utensils out with each new dish. However, the fine dining establishments that do still stick with this traditional table setting will require a certain etiquette. See these quick rules here:
1) | If you know you are going to a fine dining restaurant, know the dress code and dress appropriately. |
2) |
If you are on a business meeting, never have more than two alcoholic beverages. |
3) |
If you don't like something, don't make a fuss. Just leave it. |
4) |
Don't blow on hot food for it to cool down. Just wait for it to cool on its own. |
5) |
Turn off your cell phone and do not use it! Also, do not take photos of your food or the table. |
6) |
Don't treat the servers badly. |
7) |
Do not salt your food before you taste it. |
