"CONVERSATION STARTERS"
Getting the nerve to talk to someone can be nerve-wrecking. Whether you are an international student wanting to make American friends; a new employee who wants to make a good impression with your peers; or you are simply a shy person, there are some very easy steps you can use to start a conversation with a complete stranger. Here are some conversation starters - topics that you can use to start a discussion with someone. These topics should never be too deep - they should be light-hearted and easy conversations. Try these:
(1) | "How is your day going so far?" |
(2) | "Where are you from?" |
(3) |
"How was your weekend?" or "What are your plans for this weekend?"
|
(4) |
If you see the same person often, but haven't been able to work the courage to talk: "Hi I'm _____. I see you here all the time so I just wanted to say hi." |
(5) |
Comment on their appearance: "I like your shirt. You have a cool style." |
(6) |
Talk about what's in the news: "Did you hear about what happened in CT?" |
(7) |
Depending on time of year: "Do you have plans for Valentine's Day?" You can use this for Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. |
(8) |
If you are at a party or event: "How do you know the host?" |
(9) |
"What do you do for fun?"
|
After you ask people these initial questions, you can continue the conversation by asking more in depth questions about the original topic. If you are familiar with the topic, mention it somehow. For example:
(A) | What do you do for fun? |
(B) | I like to go rock climbing. |
(A) |
Wow, that's interesting. How long have you been doing it? |
(B) |
I have been doing it for a few years now. |
(A) |
Is it very difficult? My older brother has tried it in Utah. |
(B) |
Oh really? Cool! |
(A) |
Maybe you can take me sometime! |
(B) |
Sounds good! |
Avoid topics like: religion, politics, money, family problems, health problems or sex if you do not know these people really well. Topics that are always okay to talk about are: food and drink; family (do you have sisters or brothers?); travels; hobbies and interests; work (what do you do for work?).
