Do you ever get confused about when to hyphenate the words year old? There are two rules:
1. When year old is functioning like an adjective describing a noun, then use hyphens.
Examples:
Her two-year-old son is as cute as a button.
My twenty-year-old friend helped me write an essay.
He's ready to replace his three-year-old phone.
2. When the year old is functioning as a noun itself.
Examples:
The sixty-five-year-old applied for Social Security.
My fifteen-year-old is driving me crazy!
I wish I could be a twenty-five-year-old again.
So, when do you not hyphenate years old? Years old is not hyphenated when it comes after the noun it is modifying.
Examples:
My daughter is twenty-two years old.
In February, Makiko will be twenty-seven years old.
He turned thirty years old in December.
Note: the numbers are always hyphenated when written out even if the years old part of the phrase is not.
