Idioms are a group of words that have gained a certain meaning over many years. It’s important to know English idioms and to use them correctly. Here’s a common one that has an interesting background:
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!
Meaning: Don’t get rid of something valuable when you are getting rid of useless things. Be careful to distinguish between tossing the invaluable things and potentially including something that is valuable.
Origin: This idiom is based on the German proverb from the early 1500s. But there are a number of different stories, and perhaps we will never know the exact origin, but here is one story: People used to bathe very rarely. When they did bathe, the whole family would use the same water without changing it. People say that adult males would bath first, then the females, and the children and babies would go last. By the time the babies got in the tub, the water was so dirty you could hardly see the baby. The poor mothers had to take extra care that their babies were not thrown out with the bathwater.
